Newcastle FC is enjoying bliss under English coach Eddie Howe. It has never been so good for the fans at St. James Park and within the first two seasons of his reign, they’re in the European Champions League group stages. Newcastle FC took the fourth position in the 2022/23 English season. It was their first UEFA Champions League qualification for twenty years. Until October 2021, Newcastle FC was under the control of British businessman, Mike Ashley and the takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium marked a major turning point to their current good performances. Under Ashley, the staff were said to have worked like elephants but ate like ants, until respite came from the new owners. Events both on and off the field needed to improve and these changes were swiftly made by the new owners. The revitalized morale of the personnel brought the change that hitherto appeared elusive.
The Eddie Howe Era Begins
Most football pundits never expected Eddie Howe to be the choice of the new investors. He'd built a very modest record for himself by managing small clubs in the lower rung of the league. With the new investors, everyone expected Newcastle FC to get popular football coaches with distinguished records of winning trophies. Eddie Howe perfectly repaid the trust with a fourth position last season. They've done well so far in their first two matches of the UEFA group matches. They got an away draw against AC Milan and blew away PSG, 4-0, complete with Kylian Mbappe. The ecstasy that night has been a rare occurrence at St. James Park.
For more than ten years now, Newcastle had remained perennial occupiers of the middle and lower rungs of the EPL table and the sight of a foreign club coming for a formal meeting looked a mirage! It wasn't.
Shrewd Investments, Wonderful Results
The new investors have been good managers of their business and have an astute scouting team, looking at the quality of their new recruitments. It has been very modest, without the bloated transfer fees other teams incur. The transfer of Alexander Isak ( 70m Euros from Real Sociedad FC), Victor Guimaraes (42.1m Euros from Lyon FC), and Sandro Tonali (64m Euros from AC Milan) have been the most expensive, yet they never had to break the bank.
Last season, they humiliated fellow contenders, Tottenham Hotspur FC, 6-1 to show their intent and remained resolute until they got the 4th place. This season they've already demolished Sheffield United FC, 8-0, PSG 3-0, and Crystal Palace 4-0, to show their intent about the things to expect this season. They win with warmth and a gorgeous attacking style that makes their opponents look inferior. That is the blistering ecstasy they've brought to the game. Though always looking calm and unfussy, Eddie Howe would be the happiest man at the moment. He’s loved by the fans, and respected by his players and employers. His jolly ride looks to have just started!
